Whirlpool Wanted Washing Machine Tariffs. It Didn't Plan for a Trade War

Trade barriers can ricochet through an economy in ways even proponents don’t expect, as shown by washers, among the first consumer products targeted by the Trump administration. The protection against overseas competitors has been more than negated by subsequent steel and aluminum tariffs. Prices are up and demand is softening.
